Build your content marketing calendar around your keyword research

If you’re promoting your business, then content marketing is going to be a key part of the strategy.

Content marketing is producing content to attract and retain audiences. This might look like newsletters, blog posts, podcasts, videos and much more.

Plan your content based on a monthly theme

A great idea to save time and energy is to focus on a monthly content marketing schedule that centres around a theme.

We here at Charlton Thursday like to plan ahead – loosely planning for a flexible 12-month content marketing schedule for our clients.

For an accounting client, this may centre around key business dates within the year e.g. each May the theme will be ‘tax time’. For an e-commerce business selling school supplies, this could include a ‘back to school’ theme in January.

But how do you know what themes to plan around for the other 11 months of the year? This is where keyword research becomes super handy.

Keyword research to plan your themes

Some simple keyword research will go a long way to educating you on what information your audience is looking for. Based on this research, you’ll then be able to plan out 12 content themes to focus on for the year.

Let’s say your keyword research has led you to find that ‘fringe benefits tax’ is an important topic for your accounting firm. With this knowledge you can write an educational and informative blog post for your website on fringe benefits tax. You’ll then be able to repurpose this information for your monthly newsletter and social media for the month.

Wondering how to go about keyword research then?

HubSpot have some handy articles on how to get started with keyword research and Semrush has numerous free services within its online SEO tool.
